A fully revised second edition of Paul Heiney’s Ocean Sailing will be published on 5 November 2026. Designed to help sailors prepare for the leap from coastal cruising to an ocean passage, Ocean Sailing: The Essential Guide to Making Yourself Ocean Ready, combines practical advice with the first-hand experiences of seasoned long-distance cruisers.
The new edition has been extensively updated to reflect the realities of ocean sailing today. Alongside guidance on budgeting, safety, maintenance, weather and first aid, it includes new material covering climate change and shifting weather patterns, geopolitical considerations when planning routes, satellite communications and the mental preparation involved in setting off.
There are also expanded sections on finances and working abroad, supported by practical tips, colour diagrams and photography.
Whether an ocean passage is firmly in the plans or still a long-held ambition, the new edition promises plenty of practical advice and inspiration for turning that ambition into reality.
Published in time for Christmas, it could also make an ideal gift for aspiring ocean sailors or anyone dreaming of making their first ocean passage.
The second edition of Ocean Sailing launches on 5 November and is available to pre-order now.
